Peter Herrmann (composer)

Peter Herrmann (born December 19, 1941 in Chemnitz ; † October 28, 2015 ) was a German composer and university professor .

Life

Herrmann was born in Chemnitz in 1941. From 1956 to 1960 he studied violin at the Robert Schumann Conservatory in Zwickau . From 1960 to 1965 he studied violin and composition at the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music in Leipzig with Fritz Geißler and Wilhelm Weismann . In 1965 he received the second prize at the International Composition Competition “ Prague Spring . From 1965 to 1967 he was a Mendelssohn scholarship holder of the Ministry of Culture of the GDR. From 1967 he taught at the Leipzig Theater School . In 1969 he became assistant for composition, instrumentation and form analysis at the Leipzig University of Music. In the same year he received the Leipzig City Art Prize . Ten years later he received the GDR Art Prize and the Hanns Eisler Prize from Radio DDR II . He became a full professor of composition in 1984. From 1984 to 1987 he was rector of the Leipzig University of Music.
