It starts with pictures from Leninplatz in Berlin-Friedrichshain . The painter and draftsman Leo Haas , who is celebrating his 70th birthday, lives here . This film wants to accompany the artist, who is a good narrator, but also a listener and precise observer, at some stages of his life. His morality is the morality of the revolutionary working class to which he professes, his art is partisan. He draws for well-known newspapers and magazines in the GDR, such as New Germany and Eulenspiegel . The subject of his art is always man, the suffering, the fighting and the victorious man these days.
Leo Haas grew up in the Czech city of Opava and studied painting and graphics in Karlsruhe according to the Jewish traditions of his parents' house . When the Nazis on Czechoslovakia swoops down, he has already found his place and recognized that the resistance also needs art. Denounced as a cultural Bolshevik, he was arrested by the Gestapo . So begins a six-year journey to hell for him, including to Theresienstadt , Auschwitz , Sachsenhausen and Mauthausen . His file is marked Return Unwanted . After his liberation he becomes a member of the KPČ and from now on draws for the communist daily newspaper of the KPČ Rudé právo .
Leo Haas has lived and worked in the GDR since 1956 .

The premiere of the film, shot on ORWO color under the working title Leo Haas , took place on June 25, 1971. The first broadcast in the 2nd program of the television of the GDR took place on December 23, 1972.
