Hanns Eisler Prize
The Hanns Eisler Prize was a German music prize named after the composer Hanns Eisler . It was donated by Radio DDR - with the advisory participation of the Music Section of the German Academy of the Arts in Berlin (East) and the Association of German Composers and Musicologists of the GDR (VDK) - and on the occasion of his 70th birthday on 6 July 1968 for the first time in the ballroom of the old town hall in Leipzig . The Hanns Eisler Prize was endowed with 10,000 marks and was one of the most renowned music prizes in the German Democratic Republic.
Statute
The statute stated: “The Hanns Eisler Prize is awarded for new compositions and musicological work that make excellent contributions to the socialist musical culture of the GDR.” One or more composers (in the “Composition” category) and musicologists ( from 1971 in the category “scientific work”). The prize-winning pieces were then premiered in a special concert.
The first winners in 1968 included Peter Dorn , Gerhard Rosenfeld and Ruth Zechlin . The composers Reinhard Pfundt , Gerhard Rosenfeld and Udo Zimmermann received two awards each . In 1990 and 1991 the prize was awarded by the German broadcaster Kultur , most recently to Klaus Martin Kopitz and Hans Tutschku . Since 1993, the Hanns Eisler Prize for composition and interpretation of contemporary music has been awarded to young performers and composers by the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin .
