Laufer gate tower in Nuremberg

The Laufer Tor is an old gate in the northeast of the Nuremberg city wall .

The Laufer gate tower is one of the four distinctive, round main towers of the Nuremberg city fortifications, its old name is "Schwarz M".

The gate is already occupied as part of the last city wall in 1377 and took over the function of the Laufer Schlagturm of the penultimate city wall. It began traffic on the Golden Road from Sulzbach and Prague, as well as the north-leading road from Bayreuth . In 1552 the gate tower was badly damaged in the Second Margrave War . In 1556 it was converted by Jörg Unger into the round tower that still stands today. At the end of the 19th century, the facility was adapted to the requirements of increasing traffic and all structures except the tower were demolished.

The section of the city wall located south of the Laufer Tor between Rathenauplatz and Pegnitz is called the Laufertormauer . Thereafter, the lane located inside the city wall Laufertormauer and the main road outside Laufertorgraben were named. The Laufertorzwinger is located north of the Laufer Tor .

At the southern end of the Laufertor wall , on the north bank of the Pegnitz , the Hübnerstor was built in 1892 through the city wall and under the Zwinger . The pedestrian gate was named after the nearby Hübnersplatz .

The entrance to the Laufertorkeller is about 50 meters to the west .
