Sterntor (Nuremberg)

The star gate today

The Sterntor is a lane through the Nuremberg city wall and a pedestrian access to the southern Nuremberg old town.

History and present

In 1869 the new gate was broken through the Frauentormauer and named after the nearby Sterngasse. The tower of the neighboring bluestar plant was demolished in 1871 and later rebuilt at a reduced height.

Together with the "Karl-Bröger-Tunnel" leading under the railway embankment, the Sterntor forms a connecting axis for pedestrians and cyclists to the Südstadtpark and Südstadt .

The sculpture garden of the Neues Museum was opened in the Zwinger between the Sterntor and Frauentor in 2004 .

Bluestarwood

After the discovery of a groundwater source at the location of the later star gate, a five-story water tower with a pumping station was built from 1583. Originally it was called the "waterworks in front of the Frauentor", later the "Blausternwerk"; it served to supply the city center with water. In 1643 it had to be restored by the engineer Johann Carl.
