West gate, view from the west

The west gate is a former gate of the Nuremberg city wall . Today, at the place of the lost gate, is one of the main traffic-technical entrances to the western old town of Nuremberg .

The adjacent Mohrengasse and the neighboring Mohrenköpfleinszwinger were named after the former Zum Mohrenkopf inn . To better connect the west, the old kennel entrance was redesigned into a city gate in 1863 and first called the Mohrentor , then in 1870 the west gate . It led to the Kontumaz garden . In 1879 the moat was filled in and part of the city wall was torn down.

The wall area between the west gate and Hallertor is called the west gate wall . After that, lying within the city Mauergasse were Westtormauer which lies outside the city walls alley Westtorzwinger and outlying main road Westtorgraben named. In the west gate wall and in the tower "Grünes C" north of the west gate there is now a dormitory. The street Westtorgraben leads over the Pegnitzbrücke to the north (in front of the Fronveste ), but the bridge is called Hallertorbrücke . To the south of the west gate is the Mohrenturm ("Green B") with the Museum Tower of the Senses .
