Woehrder Gate

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wöhrder Tor was a gate through the Nuremberg city wall and is now one of the main entrances to Nuremberg's eastern old town.

Wöhrder door

According to other previous gates, the Werdertürlein (also called Wöhrder Tor ) is occupied as a pedestrian entrance through the city wall in 1428 and led to the suburb of Wöhrd 300 m to the east . Many of the citizens of Nuremberg owned property and rights of use here. At first the path went through a tower, later through the wall. The building is in the east the counterpart to the Hallertürlein in the west of the wall.

In 1613 the Wöhrdertorbastei was built next to the little door by Wolf Jacob Stromer .

Woehrder Gate

In order to get a better connection to the growing Wöhrd, the small door and bastion were demolished in 1871 and a wide road access, today's Wöhrder Tor , was created. Strictly speaking, the name “Wöhrder Tor” only refers to the gap in the city wall, which extends undisturbed to the south , but has been demolished to the north, up to the Laufer Tor .
