The Südstadtpark is a small, narrow district park in the Galgenhof district of Nuremberg . The formal designed green area is divided into three areas, which are arranged in an east-west direction.

location

The Südstadtpark is located in the southern part of Nuremberg , directly south of the main train station , and extends in an east-west direction along the railway systems between Celtisplatz and Tafelfeldstrasse. Karl-Prölß-Platz forms its center. Pedestrians and cyclists can easily reach it from the city center through the Karl-Prölß-Tunnel. Its size is 1.19 hectares.

history

The tracks running in an east-west direction on a railway embankment blocked the southern part of the city from the center as early as the 19th century . During the Second World War , the houses south of the dam were destroyed by bombs.

After the war these areas remained undeveloped and were used as parking lots. Plans arose for a four-lane road connection between Frankenschnellweg in the west and Regensburger Strasse in the east, which should run south of the railway facilities. These plans were laid down in the general traffic plan in 1974 and the city began purchasing the necessary land.

In 1984 the old plans were canceled, in 1989 an urban planning competition was carried out and as a result the creation of the "Südstadtpark" was decided on the existing large car park. On the one hand, the lack of green spaces in the southern part of the city should be alleviated, on the other hand the connection between the southern part of the city and the inner city should be improved. The Nuremberg landscape architect Walter Stadelmann planned the park . In 1995 the construction of the green area began. The park was implemented in several construction phases. The construction work was not completed until 2000. The costs amounted to 1.3 million euros, with 957,000 euros subsidized with urban renewal funds.

It was also planned to beautify the unattractive pedestrian and cyclist tunnel with a light installation that would run from the fountain through the tunnel. It was deleted for reasons of cost.

layout

The district park has three different usage zones with different characters. 76 trees have been planted in the Südstadtpark.

Eastern area

The eastern part of the green area between the Celtis underpass along Pillenreuther Straße and Karl-Prölß-Platz is used for lounging, movement and contemplation . It is characterized by a lower degree of sealing and a higher proportion of green space. A row of trees consisting of sycamore maple ( Acer pseudoplatanus ) delimits the eastern part of the Südstadtpark in a southerly direction along the Celtisstrasse. The network of paths is strongly geometrical. The paths are coverings with a water-bound ceiling provided with cobblestones of granite is taken. The narrow green area has numerous lawns. Many wooden benches offer plenty of opportunities to stay. In the middle of this part of the park, as an extension to Endterstraße, there is a central lounge area, which is spanned by a pergola. Four paths radiate towards this square. The tree plantings are geometrically oriented and less arranged in groups of trees. Trees arranged in a grid form the north-eastern border of the park. Perennial plantings were arranged in the transition area to Karl-Prölß-Platz, which members of the Bund Naturschutz maintain on a voluntary basis. A high wall forms the northern border to the railway line and encloses the space.

A monumental concrete sculpture by the American sculptor Peter Lundberg was installed on the corner of Pillenreuther Strasse and Celtisstrasse . The name of the work of art is called Portrait of a Man and a Woman . The sculpture was integrated into the Südstadtpark along a sculpture park in the summer of 2007 as part of the stop! The sculpture park comprised a 3.5-kilometer art path between the Südstadtpark and the Hummelsteiner Park. Over a period of 4 weeks, 80 exhibits by 39 artists from 24 countries were exhibited in the public space. The work by Lundberg received the first prize and was acquired by the Sparkasse Nürnberg and through the program of the German urban development fund " Social City ".

Western area

Western part of the Südstadtpark, also known as Celtispark

In the west between the Tafelfeldtunnel and the Karl-Prölß-Tunnel there is a large playground with climbing rocks, a tube slide and a cable car. In the middle of the playground a climbing tower protrudes, on which a monkey climbs on a pole and invites you to play. A concrete climbing rock with hollows and grips serves as a practice site for free climbing . Despite the elaborate design, the children's play area is not very frequented by visitors.

center

The center of the park is located on Karl-Prölß-Platz. The circular square is framed by a large pergola. There are numerous benches underneath. In the middle is a square fountain designed by the architect. In addition to communication, transfer and stay, the square also serves as an event space. An important connecting axis for pedestrians and cyclists runs across the fortified square between the southern part of the city and the old town of Nuremberg. The Karl-Prölß-Tunnel is the connecting element between Karl-Bröger-Straße in Galgenhof and Tafelhofstraße in the Tafelhof district .

Events

In the park from 2005 to 2009 the big Asia festival Spirit Asia took place, to which 60,000 visitors last came.
