Timo Simonlatser (born May 17, 1986 in Rakvere , then Estonian SSR , Soviet Union ) is an Estonian cross-country skier .

life and career

Simonlatser developed into a pure sprint specialist at a young age. In 2004 he was able to beat the strong competition from Norway , Sweden and Finland in the sprint at the Nordic Youth World Championships in Haanja , in which not only athletes from the Nordic countries but also Estonians take part, and won the gold medal. A year earlier in Sysslebäck , his best result was fifth place over 10 kilometers of freestyle . In 2005 and 2006 he took part in the Junior World Championships. In Rovaniemi , he finished eleventh in the sprint, which was carried out in the classic technique. Over the 10 kilometer freestyle he was twelfth as the best Estonian starter. The following year he improved to eighth place in the qualification of the freestyle sprint, but was eliminated in the quarter-finals. In the final ranking he finished 22nd when Petter Northug won. On January 8, 2006 launched Simonlatser at the World Cup at home in Otepaa first time in the FIS Cross-Country World Cup . However, he did not manage to reach the finals.

Simonlatser has been a member of the Estonian World Cup team since the beginning of the 2006/07 season . At the start of the season in Kuusamo , he just missed reaching the semifinals in the sprint competition as 15th and secured his first World Cup points. With several placements among the top twenty in World Cup sprints, he then qualified for the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2007 in Sapporo, Japan . There, too, he was able to qualify for the finals and came in 24th as the best Estonian sprinter. In the 2007/08 season , Simonlatser made it into the top ten for the first time in seventh place in the sprint in Prague during the 2007/08 Tour de Ski . However, since he did not finish the Tour de Ski, he could not win any World Cup points with the best performance for him so far in the World Cup. In the sprint in Otepää, he also reached the semifinals in twelfth place. He was able to repeat this result at the beginning of the 2008/09 season in Düsseldorf . In Rybinsk , he narrowly missed the semifinals and finished in 15th place. With these results, he won the nomination for the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2009 . In the sprint, his only assignment in Liberec , he missed the qualification for the finals as 39th. Simonlatser achieved his best result in the 2009/10 season in Rybinsk, where he achieved twelfth place in the sprint and seventh place in the team sprint with Anti Saarepuu . He was then nominated by the Estonian Ski Association for the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver . There he survived the qualification and was eliminated as 27th in the quarterfinals. After bad results at the beginning of the 2010/11 season , Simonlatser started in the Alpencup . In Ortisei , he finished fourth behind the Russian trio Alexei Petuchow , Nikolai Morilow and Nikita Krjukow . Then he was nominated again for the World Cup and started in the Tour de Ski 2010/2011 . In the sprint in Oberhof he convinced with 13th place. He also won World Cup points in the sprint in Toblach . Simonlatser sprinted his best career result so far a short time later at the World Cup in Liberec, where he reached the semi-finals and was able to celebrate his first place in the top ten in a World Cup race with eighth place.
