Jürgen Elsner

Jürgen Elsner (born April 22, 1932 in Finsterwalde ) is a German ethnomusicologist and author .

Life

Jürgen Elsner studied music theory, musicology and Arabic studies at the German University of Music and the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1958 to 1964 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Musicology there. In 1964 he was with the dissertation to vocal solo performance of Eisler's music battle to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1970 he completed his habilitation with the work The concept of maqam in Egypt in recent times . He then taught music history and ethnomusicology at the Humboldt University in Berlin and the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . From 1975 to 1993 he was professor for ethnomusicology at the Humboldt University in Berlin. From 1979 to 1990 he was head of the musicology department.
