Erhard Ragwitz

Erhard (Eberhard) Ragwitz (born September 1, 1933 in Königsberg i. Pr. ) Is a German musicologist , composer and university professor. From 1986 to 1989 he was rector of the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin .

Life

Erhard Ragwitz comes from Königsberg, the capital of the Prussian province of East Prussia . Self-taught, he learned in his childhood violin , bandoneon and piano . He attended a school in Colditz , Saxony , where he founded an instrumental group and led the choir. He was discovered by Fritz Reuter , who enabled him to study music after graduating from high school . Later he was a student of Ottmar Gerster . Reuter studied musicology, music education, music theory and composition at the music academies in Halle and Leipzig and at the Institute for Music Education at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg .

In 1960 he became an assistant and aspirant (with Wilhelm Weismann ), in 1964 a teacher and in 1968 a lecturer at the University of Music in Leipzig. He was also temporarily active as Vice-Rector for Teaching and Professional Practice. From 1973 he taught at the Hanns Eisler Music Academy in Berlin. From 1973 to 1976 he held the position of director of the special school for music . From 1976 to 1978 he was 1st Vice Rector of the university. In 1978 he took over a professorship for composition. In 1981 he became head of the composition and composition department. As the successor to Olaf Koch , he was appointed rector of the music academy in Berlin on September 19, 1986. Following an application by the university's honorary commission, the Senate Department for Science and Research gave notice in November 1989 .

Ragwitz was a member of the board of the Association of Composers and Musicologists of the GDR . Since the early 1960s he has been composing with orchestral, chamber music and vocal music works (cantatas, choral works, songs, arrangements). In 1981 the Staatskapelle Weimar premiered his 1st symphony under Rolf Reuter and in 1986 his 2nd symphony under Oleg Caetani .

From 1971 to 1974 Ragwitz, who was a member of the SED, served as a candidate for the SED district leadership in Leipzig. He is married to the music teacher and cultural politician Ursula Ragwitz (* 1928).
