Life

Duke Ferdinand of Parma, painting by Pietro Melchiorre Ferrari

Pietro Melchiorre Ferrari was born as the son of the painter and architect Paolo Ferrari (1705–1792), who was known for his sacred paintings. After training by his father, he first studied with the abbot Giuseppe Peroni in Parma, then he went to school with Vittorio Bigari in Bologna . He then returned to Parma and attended the Academy of Fine Arts as a student of Giuseppe Baldrighi . He achieved success in competitions at the Academy of Parma, especially with a historical theme (1760) "Seneca Svenato" (" Seneca opens its veins") and a religious (1761) "Guarigione del paralitico" ("Healing the Paralyzed") both of which are currently in the National Gallery of Parma with other of his works. Since then he has approached French painting in the style of Antoine Watteau and Jean-Marc Nattier in his works . In addition to religious themes, including the pictures “Sant'Anna” and “Sacra Famiglia” (“Holy Family”), Ferrari has created remarkable portraits such as those of Frugoni , the Minister du Tillot and Duke Ferdinand . In 1785 he was appointed court portrait painter of Parma in recognition of his outstanding art of portraiture, combined with the right to operate his own studio as a master of painting.

One of his paintings, the altarpiece “Mass of St. Gregory” (1765/1768), is preserved in the church of San Giovanni di Nizza Monferrato , where his signature was discovered on the back of the canvas. It represents the vision of Pope Gregory who founded the Gregorian masses .

His will of August 30, 1787 shows that he declared his wife Alba Grazioli to be the heir, as the only daughter Fernanda had died three years earlier. He was buried in the Church of San Quintino in Parma.

Pietro Melchiorre Ferrari's works are now represented in museums in Italy and abroad. Paintings from his hand adorn numerous churches in Parma and the surrounding areas.
