This is a list of museums in Italy . Due to its cultural wealth, Italy has the world's highest density of museums with around 1500 art museums. The museums also form an important basis for tourism in Italy .

Museums according to number of visitors

A study published annually by the Italian Touring Club on the number of visitors to the 30 most visited museums in Italy calculated a total of around 23 million visitors for these museums in 2008.

This corresponds to around a quarter of all visitors to the around 3,800 museums and 1,800 archaeological sites in Italy.
