The Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Music High School is a state special high school in Berlin . Musically gifted children and young people are taught there from the 5th grade. The school building is in Berlin-Mitte . Foreign students have the opportunity to live in the boarding school in the Lichtenberg district.
history
In 1956 the primary school for music was founded and named after Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach , the so-called "Berlin Bach". In 1959/60, a children's class for 10 to 16 year olds was introduced at the Berlin University of Music , from which the special school for music developed. Since 1965 the school was an independent high school and at the same time a department of the university.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall , the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach high school was run as a school experiment for 14 years. Since the 2005/06 school year, the grammar school has been a “school with a special pedagogical character”. This leads to some privileges and leeway for artistic development. Basic musical subjects such as composition and ear training were given the status of a regular school subject, for example, and achievements from the Jugend musiziert competition can be included in the Abitur grade.
The main building on Rheinsberger Strasse was restored by May 2006. The repair work on the outbuilding is still ongoing.
location
The school is located on Rheinsberger Strasse in the Mitte district of Berlin . The Coubertin-Gymnasium boarding school used by the school is located on Rhinstrasse in the Lichtenberg district .
School profile
The Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Music High School is a special high school. The prerequisite for attending school is becoming a guest auditor at one of Berlin's music academies. Every six months, the progress is reviewed in front of a commission of university lecturers and graded according to a point system. As part of their guest audiences, each student receives 90 minutes of individual tuition in the main subject, 45 minutes in the compulsory subject piano (from grade 7), 45 minutes each of music composition lessons (from grade 5) and aural training lessons (from grade 7) in small groups from university lecturers and professors Part of orchestral training and, if necessary, chamber music lessons. Instrumentalists who do not participate in the orchestra are obliged to attend choir rehearsals.
In addition to the close cooperation with the Berlin music academies ( University of Music "Hanns Eisler" Berlin , University of the Arts Berlin ), there is regular cooperation with important musical cultural institutions in the city such as the Landesmusikrat , the Landesmusikakademie, the Konzerthaus Berlin and important orchestras in the city. The intensive musical training is integrated into the grammar school training; achievements made by Jugend musiziert can be incorporated into the Abitur.
Most of the students come from Berlin and Brandenburg, but there are also students from other federal states. Only a small part is housed in the boarding school. The number of pupils, which is limited to 165, is taught in small classes in one go. English and French are offered as foreign languages. In contrast to regular grammar schools in Berlin, students take their Abitur after 13 years. An additional class 11, which is inserted, relieves the students' lesson tables in order to be able to grant more freedom for musical training.
Due to the cooperation with the music academies, special regulations apply to vacation dates.

The school has had its own symphony orchestra since 1996 . The annual highlights are the February concert in the French Friedrichstadtkirche and the summer concert in the chamber music hall of the Berlin Philharmonic . The conductor Samuel Lee is the artistic director .
