Special school for music

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The special school for music was a type of school to promote musical talents in the GDR . There were four such institutions, most of which were preparing to study at one of the four music universities and were located at the respective university location - in Berlin , Dresden and Weimar . Only the special school belonging to the Leipzig University of Music was located in Halle (Saale) . The lowest grade was the 6th grade, but due to the large number of additional subjects (artistic main subject, music theory, ear training, music studies, choir and orchestra), the subject matter up to the end of 10th grade was spread over six years, so that the graduates could attend school a year later when their peers left. This manifested itself externally in the fact that class 10 I was followed by class 10 II . Polytechnic lessons did not take place. The graduates of the special schools did not have to pass a regular aptitude test for studying at a university of music, but in the penultimate school year a pre-selection of the applicants took place in the form of a central performance comparison of the special schools.

Development after the fall of the Wall

After the German reunification , most of the special schools for music were converted into music high schools. In 1991 the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach music school was founded in Berlin . Since 2005 it has been a school with a special pedagogical character . The school in Dresden is now the supraregional Saxon State High School for Music Carl Maria von Weber . The Belvedere Castle Music High School was established in Weimar in 1994 as a UNESCO project school . In Halle, the special school of the Leipzig University of Music, which was located at the “Georg Friedrich Händel” Conservatory, was affiliated to the Latina August Hermann Francke . All of the successor schools to the former special schools are now used to promote gifted children in Germany.
