Thomas Blumenthal

Thomas Blumenthal (born January 29, 1958 in Berlin ) is a German classical guitarist and music teacher .

Life

Blumenthal received his first guitar lessons at the age of nine. Due to his talent, he attended the Hanns Eisler Special School for Music in Berlin from 1969 to 1975 . He then studied until 1980 in the guitar class with Barbara Richter at the "Hanns Eisler" University of Music in Berlin . He attended courses with Narciso Yepes , Leo Brouwer , Alexander Frautschi , Vladimír Mikulka , Miguel Angel Girollet and Flores Chaviano .

He was a successful participant in the international music competitions in Esztergom , Hungary (1980) and in Markneukirchen (1981 and 1985).

From 1980 to 1986 he worked as an assistant at the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music in Leipzig . Since 1984 he has been teaching guitar at the Fanny Hensel Music School in Berlin and has been head of the plucked instruments department since 1995 . He is the initiator of music festivals and guitar competitions in Berlin. With the Musikzentrum Berlin he launched the New Music series to listen to and participate in. Guests were among others the composers Hans Jürgen Wenzel , Jürgen Ganzer and Walter Thomas Heyn. In 1991 he consulted Reinbert Evers in Münster.

Blumenthal was a member of the Leipzig Consort and guest player in the Avantgarde Ensemble around the pianist Steffen Schleiermacher and in the Konfrontation Ensemble of the Philharmonic State Orchestra Halle . In 1992 he was a founding member of the Sortisatio ensemble . Since then he has played successfully with solo musicians from the MDR Symphony Orchestra . So far two CDs have been made.

As a soloist and chamber musician, he has given concerts in Germany and abroad, for example in China , Switzerland , Liechtenstein , Austria , the Netherlands and Poland . He has given concerts at well-known music festivals a. a. the Berlin Music Biennale , the Dresden Days of Contemporary Music and the Halle Handel Festival . He recorded numerous radio productions with the WDR and MDR and played under conductors such as Friedrich Goldmann and Roland Kluttig . Numerous world premieres were given to him, for example, he performed Walter Thomas Heyn's Concerto for Guitar and String Orchestra at the XXVIII. Hallischen Musiktage first .

Thomas Blumenthal was appointed several times as a juror at national and international music competitions and a. at the side of Roberto Aussel , Frédéric Zigante , María Isabel Siewers and David Tanenbaum .
