prehistory

With the exception of Christian Henkings Sillis , all compositions on CD 8 Pieces on Paul Klee are commissioned by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk on the occasion of its 75th anniversary.

The Groupe Lacroix is a clay creator. It consists of well-known Swiss and Austrian composers from the contemporary music scene. Its members attended master classes with the renowned Russian composer Edisson Denissow as part of the Lucerne Festival . The group was born in the Center musical de la Fondation Hindemith Chalet de Lacroix , Paul Hindemith's last residence in Blonay .

In addition to the chairman of the Switzerland section of the International Society for New Music , Jean-Luc Darbellay , the internationally successful musicians John Wolf Brennan and Marianne Schroeder count themselves . The composer group also includes Christian Henking , Michael Schneider , Michael Radanovics and Alfons Karl Zwicker .

With the exception of Henkings Sillis (DSE), the compositions were premiered in 1999 at the MDR Music Summer in the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig and in 2002 at the Hindemith Music Center in Blonay.

The music

The following creations were inspired by the Swiss painter Paul Klee and his pictures:

  • Obsessed girl

Thuring Bräm dealt with Klee's portraiture. Klee painted both positive and negative faces. He was particularly dedicated to feminine characters. Thus Demonic Lady (1937) and Obsessive Girls (1924) of its ore depressive attitude. Bräm acquired knowledge of the picture at the Fondation Beyeler in Basel in 2000 . The entire quartet was recognized in 2001.

  • Shark Turtle Ray

During a stay in Sydney , Australia (1998/99) Schneider got the urge to create. The sea creatures shark , turtle and rays made him feel inspired to write three vivid sentences. The oboe, viola and guitar play.

  • How the clover became four-leaved

In 1999, Schroeder was influenced by the watercolors Hat Kopf, Hand, Fuss und Herz (1930) and Mr. Z (1934). All movements are in one piece and the instruments interact with one another.

  • N-gl

Brennan is referring to the Angelus Novus (1920) by Paul Klee. Numerous angels appeared to the painter, including angels, still groping from 1939. The short expression N-gl (1999) is a reference to three instruments without a guitar.

  • Sillis

Sillis is the only work that was not explicitly composed for the ensemble, it was written back in 1992. Nevertheless, it refers to Hauptweg and Nebenwege (1929). It is one of Klee's most famous pictures and was created after his trip to Egypt . Henking created a guitar work that relates to structures.

  • Grieving

Mourning refers to the picture of the same name from 1934, in which Klee reveals his deep dismay over experiences after his release from National Socialist imprisonment. Zwicker's composition was created in 2002 for the entire sound.

  • Desecrated Sphinx, The Sphinx is leaving

Michael Radanovics interpreted the sketches Desecrated Sphinx (1939) and The Sphinx Goes (1939). Klee became mysterious as an artistic senior. Radanovics tried to capture precisely this mood in 1999.

  • So to speak

The painting So to speak (1933) and thus Darbellay's last composition traces Paul Klee's dots and lines in 17 miniatures after the forced new beginning in Switzerland. The piece from 1997 has a motivating and future-oriented effect.

successes

The works embodied on the CD have been performed on several tours in numerous cities in Switzerland, with the ensemble giving concerts in Bern , Lucerne , Lausanne and Winterthur . In 2004 the works were broadcast on the Dutch Concertzender . In 2008 there were readings with Alexander Klee , Paul Klee's grandson. In addition, other composers felt encouraged to compose on Klee. The Sortisatio Ensemble has been invited to the People's Republic of China and is about to collaborate with international composers.
