Flores Melquíades Chaviano Jiménez (born December 10, 1946 in Caibarién ) is a Cuban composer , arranger , guitarist , conductor and music teacher . He has lived in exile in Spain since 1981 .

Education

Flores Chaviano was born in 1946 in Caibarién in the central Cuban province of Villa Clara . There he got his first guitar lessons from Pedro Julio del Valle (1921–1969). He later followed his teacher to Santa Clara . He then studied at the Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana and studied guitar with Isaac Nicola and composition with José Ardévol and Sergio Barroso at the Instituto Superior de Arte , one of the most renowned music universities in Latin America. He also attended master classes with Leo Brouwer and Alirio Díaz .

After moving to Spain in 1981, he finished his studies with Demetrio Ballesteros at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid .

His works are repeatedly premiered by international orchestras and soloists such as the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de México , the Orchestra of the Music Academy Danzig , the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada , the Orquesta Internacional de Madrid , the Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias (OSPA), the Chamber orchestras from Nalón, the El Salvador State Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Montevideo, soloists from the Komische Oper Berlin , the Mutare Ensemble in Frankfurt and the Featuring Ensamble of New York .

Chaviano composes commissioned works for the Prince of Asturias Foundation , the National Institute for Music and Performing Arts of the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the Conservatory of Nalón and the Radio Nacional de España . Many musicians let him write pieces for them, such as the Cuban saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera .

His catalog of works includes well over 100 compositions for different instrumentations. His compositions include the Requiem for a Sonero ( Miguel Matamoros ), the homage to Victor Jara and the variations on a Yoruba theme .

In 1974 he won first prize at the National Guitar Competition of the Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba .

His concert tours have taken him all over the world. He performed his works several times in Germany, for example in Potsdam, Berlin and Dresden. He was also invited to Poland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Italy. He has made several guest appearances in the USA and played at the Kennedy Center in Washington, the Lincoln Center in New York, as well as in Los Angeles and Miami. In Spain he has given concerts in the Teatro Real and in the National Music Auditorium. In Buenos Aires he was at the Teatro Bellas Artes .

He performed as a soloist a. a. with orchestras such as the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Mexico , the Orquesta del Nuevo Mundo and the Orquesta Nacional de Cuba .

Conductor and organizer

During his activity as a musician in Cuba, he conducted several local orchestras such as the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba (CMBF), the Orquesta Sinfónica de Matanzas and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Santiago de Cuba . He played several times in the Soviet Union and countries of the Eastern Bloc.

Flores Chaviano founded the Andrés Segovia In Memoriam Festival in 1989 with the support of the Sociedad General de Autores y Editores and in 1990 the Festival Internacional de Guitarra Ponferrada . In 1992 he was the founder and since then has been the conductor of the Andres Segovia Ensemble , a chamber orchestra dedicated to contemporary music . He also heads the Cuarteto Fin de Siglo and the Trova Lírica Cubana ensemble . He has already conducted the Capilla Musical Esteban Salas de Madrid , a group that performs works by Cuban Baroque composers .

Music pedagogue

Flores Chaviano taught from 1970 to 1972 at the Conservatorio Esteban Salas and from 1978 to 1980 at the Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana. From 1979 to 1980 he was a professor at the Instituto Superior de Arte .

He gave master classes in numerous cities in Europe and America. He has taught at the University of Puerto Rico and Florida International University , among others . In addition, it took him to the conservatories in Beijing and Mexico City as well as the Rostock University of Music and Theater and the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin . In Spain he gave masterclasses in contemporary music in Madrid (1983), Salamanca (1984) and Granada (1985/87).

He taught at the Conservatories in Madrid (1988), Ponferrada (1989–1991) and Segovia (1991), where he was also director. For several years he has been a lecturer at the Conservatorio Profesional de Música Ángel Arias Macein in Madrid.
