Alirio Díaz

Alirio Díaz (born November 12, 1923 in Caserio la Candelaria / Lara ; † July 5, 2016 in Rome ) was a Venezuelan classical guitarist and editor.

Díaz studied guitar at the Escuela Superior de Música José Ángel Lamas with Raúl Borges and harmony and music history with Vicente Emilio Sojo . In 1950 he made his debut in Caracas with a concert with works by Heitor Villa-Lobos , Johann Sebastian Bach and Manuel María Ponce . With a scholarship from the Venezuelan government, he continued his education at the Conservatorio de Madrid with Regino Sáinz de la Maza .

Then Díaz worked as an assistant to Andrés Segovia at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. In 1964 he settled in Rome, from where he appeared as a guitarist throughout Europe, the USA, Japan, Australia and his home country Venezuela with a repertoire that included works by Scarlatti , Corbetta and Vincenzo Galilei as well as arrangements of Latin American and Neapolitan folk tunes and works by contemporary Venezuelan composers. He gave master classes and recorded more than thirty albums.

He has published two autobiographical books and was a co-founder of Caroni Music , which is dedicated to the publication of Latin American music such as that of the guitarist Antonio Lauro .
