Francesco Corbetta

Francesco Corbetta (* around 1615 in Pavia , † 1681 in Paris ), also French Francisque Corbette , was an Italian guitarist and composer .

Life

Corbetta worked first at the court of Louis XIV in Paris, then at that of Charles II in London . Corbetta is considered one of the most influential guitarists of the 17th century.

Five volumes of music for the five-course baroque guitar have been preserved of his works (including suites ) . The first contains mainly dance movements (e.g. in the form of the foil ) in the rasgueado technique, the later ones show him as a virtuoso master of combining rasgueado and punteado playing . Here (for example in the volume from 1643) there are also important notes on figured bass playing on the guitar. While his earlier compositions followed the Italian tradition, in the last two work volumes he turned entirely to the French style. In addition, Corbetta was an influential instrumental teacher. Among his students wereRobert de Visée , the guitarist and composer Giovanni Battista Granata (around 1622–1687), composer of a Sinfonia à dui published in 1651 in Nuova Scielta di capricci armonici in Bologna , by Soavi Concenti di Sonate (1659) and author of Novi Capricci armonici Musicali pour la Chitarra Spagnola (1674), and Remy Médard , Queen Anne of Great Britain and Louis XIV. He dedicated his Varii scherzi di sonate per la chitara spagnola to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria .
