Mathias Baier (* 1965 in Rostock ) is a German bassoonist and professor of bassoon at the Dresden University of Music .

Life

Mathias Baier was born in Rostock in 1965 and began his musical training at the age of six. He later studied bassoon at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin with Fritz Finsch. During this time he had his first chamber music experiences: He was a founding member of the Wind Quintet Kammervereinigung Berlin , which won a prize at the ARD International Music Competition in 1989 and 1993 , won the International Chamber Music Competition in Colmar and won the German Music Competition in 1991 . The quintet also made a name for itself through internationally acclaimed CD recordings.

As a soloist , Mathias Baier won first prize at the International Competition of the Fryderyk Chopin University in Warsaw in 1987 and was hired as solo bassoonist by the Staatskapelle Berlin (orchestra of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden ) in the same year . Since 1994 he has also been active as solo bassoonist in the orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival in uninterrupted periods during the summer months .

Mathias Baier is also a member of various chamber music ensembles, such as the Berlin Wind Soloists , the 13 solo winds of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra or the Prussian Court Music Chamber Orchestra , in some cases in a leading organizational position. In 2009 he founded the Ensemble Blumina together with the concert pianist Elisaveta Blumina and the solo oboist of the NDR Symphony Orchestra Kalev Kuljus , whose first CD recording on the MDG label was awarded a classical ECHO in 2014. As an orchestral soloist, Mathias Baier is a regular guest with several German symphony and opera orchestras, such as the German Symphony Orchestra , the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Bavarian State Orchestra , the NDR Symphony Orchestra and the Hamburg Philharmonic .

For example, Baier teaches in the orchestral academy of the Staatskapelle Berlin founded by Daniel Barenboim and was a lecturer at the Rostock Music Academy until 2013 . At the beginning of the 2013/14 winter semester, Baier was appointed to a professorship for bassoon at the Dresden University of Music .
