Gerhard Taschner
Gerhard Taschner (born May 25, 1922 in Jägerndorf ; † July 21, 1976 in Berlin ) was a German violin virtuoso.
Life
Taschner made his debut at the age of seven in Prague with a violin concerto by Mozart. He later studied with Jenő Hubay in Budapest , with Bronisław Huberman and Adolf Bak in Vienna . In 1939 he became concertmaster at the Brno City Theater . In 1941, at the age of 19, Wilhelm Furtwängler brought him to the Berlin Philharmonic as the youngest first concertmaster , and he quickly established himself as a celebrated soloist during the war years. After the Second World War he formed a successful trio with the cellist Ludwig Hoelscher and the pianist Walter Gieseking . In 1950 he was appointed professor at the Berlin Conservatory . He performed at concerts all over the world until the early 1960s, then Taschner had to end his career due to a back pain. After that he devoted himself exclusively to his educational work. From 1942 he was married to the pianist Gerda Nette-Taschner (* November 21, 1906 † October 15, 2012). Gerhard Taschner suffered from psychological problems towards the end of his life for which he could not find a solution. He gave in to alcohol and died of pneumonia after an operation.
His grave in the Schöneberg III cemetery in Berlin-Friedenau was kept as an honorary grave for the State of Berlin from 1990 to 2014 .
Recordings that have since been re-released (from 1997 with EMI and MDG, mostly from radio archives; the relatively few studio recordings with Archiphon) testify to the outstanding status of this violinist, whose career fizzled out and who had been completely forgotten for decades. One of the discographic highlights is his Kreutzer Sonata with the pianist Walter Gieseking , which arose spontaneously during a break while recording an orchestra.
From 2001 to 2005 the Berlin University of the Arts awarded the Gerhard Taschner Prize for violin.
