Rüdiger Volhard (born September 24, 1931 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a lawyer and notary from Frankfurt am Main, who became known for his extraordinary cultural and social commitment.

Life

Rüdiger Volhard is the son of the archaeologist Ewald Volhard , who belonged to the George circle at a young age . His great-grandfather was the chemist Jacob Volhard , his grandfather was the internist Franz Volhard , his cousin is the Nobel Prize winner Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard . He attended the Musisches Gymnasium in Frankfurt and the Birklehof , where he passed his Abitur. His schoolmates included u. a. Karl-Heinz Bohrer , who portrayed him in his volume of stories Granatsplitter (2012). Volhard is portrayed there as a charismatic and art-loving enthusiast who devoted himself particularly to the poetry of Stefan Georges and Hugo von Hofmannsthal . Subsequently, Volhard studied law at the University of Frankfurt . While he gradually withdrew from day-to-day legal business at an advanced age, he also intensified his commitment to Frankfurt's cultural life.

Because the rehearsal house for the Frankfurt choirs is mainly due to his commitment, Volhard was presented with the "Order of the Choirs". As chairman of the old city library's association , he campaigned for its reconstruction. He heads the Gontard & Metallbank Foundation, which awards the Wilhelm Merton Prize for European Translations every three years , takes care of the organization of events at the Free German Hochstift and participates in several committees in the fields of science and culture. The city of Frankfurt and its citizens are at the center of his commitment. He also proves his abilities as a pianist when he accompanies young talented singers on the piano on the occasion of the Museum Night in the Goethe House .

Volhard is married and has three children.

Honors

Volhard has received several awards, including the plaque of honor of the city of Frankfurt am Main (2002) and the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Order of Merit (2005).
