National team

In the summer of 2007, Foppe de Haan appointed him to the squad of the Dutch U-21s for the U-21 European Championship 2007 in the Netherlands. After Pieters had not yet been taken into account in the preliminary round match against Israel , he made his debut in the second game against Portugal as a substitute and secured the team's early qualification for the knockout round. In the semi-finals against England he was in the starting line-up, but was replaced due to an injury against Tim Janssen . This wound did not hinder him for long and he played for the team again in the final against Serbia . The game ended in a 4-1 win for the Dutch.

For the Olympic Summer Games 2008 Pieters was nominated for the Olympic selection of his country and came in Beijing on two missions. Among other things, he stood in the quarter-final against Argentina, which the Netherlands lost 2-1 after extra time.

After the 2010 World Cup , Bondscoach Bert van Marwijk Pieters called for the match in Donetsk on August 11, 2010 against Ukraine for the first time in the senior national team. Since the game did not take place long after the World Cup final, van Marwijk had decided not to use the players used in the World Cup. Pieters made his debut in a 1-1 draw when he came on as a substitute after half-time. In the following internationals he was in the starting line-up as a left defender.
