Dwight James Matthew McNeil (born November 22, 1999 in Rochdale ) is an English football player who is under contract with the first division club Burnley FC . The winger is currently England's U-21 international .

Career

McNeil's father Matty already played football professionally, but mainly in lower English leagues . Dwight McNeil began playing football at Manchester United before joining Burnley FC's youth academy in 2014 . After completing his football training with the juniors, he signed his first professional contract with the Clarets on April 10, 2018 . On the final day of the 2017/18 season , he made his debut in a 2-1 home defeat against AFC Bournemouth for the first team when he came on as a substitute for Aaron Lennon in the closing stages . His first game of the season in the next season 2018/19 , which was also his debut in the starting lineup, he played on September 2, 2018 in a 2-0 home defeat by Manchester United. Then he came back to the league only at the end of December of the same year . His club had slipped to a relegation zone during this time. He scored his first goal of his professional career in a 2-0 home win against West Ham United on December 30th. In the following games he sat down in the starting lineup of coach Sean Dyche and contributed to the fact that Burnley could free himself from the acute danger of relegation. He concluded the season with three goals and five assists in 21 missions.

National team

On March 21, 2019, McNeil made his debut for the England U-20 national team in a 3-1 loss to Poland .

McNeil has been England's U-21 international since October 2019 .
