Career
Aston Villa
At the age of eleven, he began playing in the Aston Villa youth academy . He led the U-18 team as captain and won the 2007/08 Premier Academy League with his team . The league group won with 68 points and advanced to the finals together with the U18 teams from Arsenal FC , Manchester City and Sunderland AFC . After Nathan Delfouneso scored the 1-0 winner against Arsenal in the semifinals, they beat the Manchester City team 2-0 in the final with goals from James Collins and Chris Herd .
In the 2008/09 season he got a place in the professional squad. In the third round of the 2008/09 UEFA Cup , he made it to the bench in the second leg against PFK ZSKA Moscow , but was not substituted on. Aston was eliminated in the third round. After no match practice with the professionals, he was moved to the reserve team. In this he rose to captain and won the Premier Reserve League South and in the final beat the winner of the Premier Reserve League North, the AFC Sunderland .
For the 2009/10 season he again took part in the preparation of the professionals, in which they won the Peace Cup 2009 when they defeated the top Italian club Juventus Turin 4-3 on penalties in the final. On August 30, 2009, he played his very first Premier League game in a 2-0 win against Fulham FC . After the injury-related failure of regular defender Curtis Davies , he played together with Carlos Cuéllar in defense. After a good performance, which he could have crowned with a header, he was voted into the Youngster Team of the Week by the BBC . Although he was pushed to the bench by the newcomers James Collins and Richard Dunne , he decided not to give up his place without a fight. In November 2009, he signed a new contract that is valid until 2012.
In the 2010/11 season he played the first two league games against West Ham United and Newcastle United from the start. He also played on the starting line-up for the following League Cup game against Blackburn Rovers . After a few games as a substitute, he returned to the first eleven against Birmingham City and stayed two more games in this due to the precarious injury situation. On November 27, Aston Villa scored both goals in a 4-2 home defeat by Arsenal .
In the 2012/13 season he was sent off the field for the first time after a foul on Nikica Jelavić . On December 8, 2012, he led his team as captain for the first time in the 0-0 draw against Stoke City after replacing Gabriel Agbonlahor . In the 2013/14 season he was once again part of the starting line-up and played 27 league games, but without scoring.
National team
Clark went through the U-17 and U-18 national teams of England, in which he came on eight missions. He played six games with the U-19s, three of them in qualifying for the U-19 European Football Championship in 2008 . He scored a goal in qualifying in a 6-0 win over Romania. He qualified first in the group, but missed the finals due to an ankle injury. In 2009 he was appointed to the U-20 squad, got the captain's armband and scored his first goal in a friendly against Italy in his second game.
He also has the opportunity to play for the Irish national football team as his parents and grandparents are from Ireland . In September 2010, the Football Association of Ireland tried to poach him. The chief scout and U-21 coach of Ireland's Don Givens were sent to a league game against Blackburn Rovers to watch him more closely.
On October 5th, Clark announced that he would play for the Irish national football team if he was nominated. His teammate Richard Dunne is said to have mediated between him, the association and the scouts.
On November 12, he was nominated for the friendly against Norway , but not used. On February 8, 2011, he played his first full international match for Ireland against Wales at Aviva Stadium . His first international goal followed on February 6, 2013 in the international match against Poland .
At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was accepted into Ireland's squad and was part of the team in the first game against Sweden. After a sharp cross from Zlatan Ibrahimovic , he underwent an own goal that cost the team the victory. In the 3-0 defeat against Belgium, he was on the field again for over 90 minutes, after which he was no longer considered until he was eliminated in the second round.
