Peace Cup
The Peace Cup is an international football competition held by the Sunmoon Peace Football Foundation , which is very closely associated with the Unification Church of the Korean Sun Myung Moon . Associations from different continents compete against each other and should thus support world peace. Since it was founded in 2003, the tournament has been held in South Korea every two years . In 2009, however, the Peace Cup was held in Spain . The previous winners have all been top teams from Europe. The Dutch club PSV Eindhoven , the English from Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa , the French series champion Olympique Lyon and the traditional German club Hamburger SV have so far won the cup. Since the men's cup was internationally accepted, the organizers decided in 2006 to introduce an extra competition for women's football. This is called the Peace Queen Cup and is played by eight national teams from five continents. Since both tournaments take place in different years, an edition of the Peace Cup is held every year. The first winner of the women's tournament was the US women's national team .
Game mode
In the first tournaments, the cup was held in two groups of four teams each. The two group winners played the final against each other. For the 2009 tournament, the competition was increased to twelve participants, who were divided into four groups. The group winners qualified for the semi-finals.
Win bonus
The tournament winner receives almost two million US dollars , the losing finalist receives 500,000 dollars.
