Ki Sung-yong (born January 24, 1989 in Gwangju ), known in German-speaking countries under the name sequence Sung-Yong Ki , is a South Korean football player . The midfielder has been under contract with Newcastle United since 2018 and is the captain of the South Korean national team . In May 2015, he was named Swansea City Player of the Year.
Career
In the club
Ki joined FC Seoul in 2006 as a 17-year-old , but was only allowed to make his debut in the first team a year later after Şenol Güneş took office . After running through various youth teams in South Korea, Ki took part in the U-19 Asian Cup and the Junior World Cup in Canada . In 2008 he took part with South Korea in the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, where the Koreans were eliminated early. Shortly afterwards, Ki was appointed to the senior national team for the first time. On September 5, 2008, he played his first international match in the World Cup qualifying against Jordan.
Due to his strong performances, Scottish club Celtic Glasgow noticed him in 2009 and signed him in December. In Scotland, Ki, who was nicknamed Kirrard in Glasgow after his model Steven Gerrard , became runner-up and league cup winner.
In August 2012, Ki moved to the Premier League at Swansea City for the club's record fee of around seven million euros , where he signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2015. During the preparation for the 2013 season he came into conflict with his coach Michael Laudrup , whereupon Ki was loaned to AFC Sunderland for one season on August 31, 2013 . There Ki developed into a service provider. He scored the 2-1 winning goal in the League Cup quarter-final victory over Chelsea and made it to the final of the League Cup , where Manchester City had to be defeated.
After Laudrup was laid off as a Swansea coach and because of Ki's good performance during the loan season, Swansea offered him a contract extension until 2018, which he signed in August. On August 16, 2014, Ki scored the first goal of the 2014/15 Premier League season against Manchester United at Old Trafford . That season he was used in 33 games and scored eight goals, including another in the second leg against Manchester United and against Tottenham Hotspur . After the season ended, he was named Swansea Player of the Year by his teammates.
In the national team
In summer 2010 he took part in the World Cup in South Africa.
Also in 2012 he was in the squad for the Olympic Games and was used in all six games. In the game for third place, he and his team were able to win the first medal for South Korean football players with the bronze medal.
