Igor Gainiachmetowitsch Badamschin ( Russian Игорь Гайниахметович Бадамшин ; born June 12, 1966 in Lesnoi ; † January 24, 2014 in Hayward ) was a Soviet - Russian cross-country skier .

Career

Badamschin ran his first of a total of 45 World Cup individual races in Bohinj in December 1988 and finished tenth in the 30 km freestyle. At the World Championships in Lahti in February 1989 , he was fifth over 50 km freestyle. In March 1989 he won second place in Oslo and first place with the relay in Falun and 18th place in the overall World Cup at the end of the season. At the beginning of the 1989/90 season he reached in Canmore with second place, his first and only podium finish in the individual World Cup. This was followed by second place in Lahti and third in the relay in Vang, and at the end of the season he achieved his best overall result with 15th place in the overall World Cup. At the 1991 World Championships in Fiemme Valley , he took 13th place over 30 km classic, eighth place over 10 km classic and fifth place with the relay. In early March 1991 he was third in the relay at the World Cup in Lahti. In the 1992/93 season he came six times in the points, including four times in the top ten and thus achieved 18th place in the overall World Cup. At the season highlight, the 1993 World Championships in Falun, he won the bronze medal with the relay. His best individual placement there was fifth place over 30 km classic. In March 1993 he ran in Lahti with the relay in second place. At the Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer the following year , he achieved 26th place over 30 km freestyle and 14th place over 50 km classic. At the World Championships in March 1995 in Thunder Bay , he finished 26th over 50 km freestyle. His last World Cup race he completed in January 1997 in Kawgolowo , which he finished in 52nd place over 30 km freestyle.

At Soviet championships Badamschin won three times over 50 km (1988, 1989, 1992) and once over 70 km (1989), over 15 km (1990) and with the relay (1989). After his career, he moved with his wife, cross-country skier Nina Gawriljuk , to Hayward , Wisconsin, and worked there as a cross-country ski trainer. He died there in January 2014 after a heart attack .
