Lubomír Buchta , known under the short form Luboš Buchta (born May 16, 1967 in Nové Město na Moravě ) is a former Czech cross-country skier .

Career

Buchta began professional cross-country skiing in 1989 and made his debut in the cross-country skiing world cup on December 7, 1991 . He immediately achieved fifth place over the 10 km in classic style in the Canadian Silver Star . On the following day he was 12th again in the points. At the following Winter Olympics in Albertville in 1992 he ran in the 30 km individual race in 13th place before he was seventh in the relay together with Radim Nyč , Pavel Benc and Václav Korunka . On March 14, 1992 Buchta celebrated his first and only World Cup podium with third place over 50 km in Vang . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun in 1993 , when separate teams for the Czech Republic and Slovakia competed for the first time, Buchta was 35th over 10 km in classic style two days later after finishing 36th over 30 km. In the following pursuit he reached rank 34.

After he made a strong start to the 1993/94 season and finished tenth again in the top 10 in Toblach , he was part of the first-time Czech team at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer . Over 10 km he crossed the finish line in 26th place, in the following 25 km pursuit he ran in 24th place. After he was only eighth and last in the relay, he finished the games with 20th place over the 50 km individual distance. In the following winter of 1994/95 he started with a victory in the FIS race on the Tauplitzalm, before he again achieved a top result in seventh place at the World Cup there a few days later. At the end of the season he traveled with the national team to the 1995 Nordic World Ski Championships in Thunder Bay, despite previously rather mixed results . There he started with the 27th place over the 30 km, before he crossed the finish line in the classic 20 th place over the 10 km. In the pursuit, he came in 31st place.

In February 1996 Buchta competed in his only sprint race in Reit im Winkl , but did not get beyond a placement in midfield as 17th. On December 29, 1996 he won the FIS race over 15 km from Liberec , after he had already finished third over 10 km the day before. At the 1997 Military World Ski Championships in Valcartier , he was 11th over 15 km. In the 1997/98 season Buchta started with fifth place at the opening World Cup in Beitostølen . It was his only top result of the season. Shortly before the turn of the year he won two FIS races in Liberec.

At his third Olympic Winter Games in Nagano in 1998 , where he was also the flag bearer of his country, Buchta surprised again after poor performance in the course of the games with a good 13th place in the final 50 km individual. At the beginning of winter 1998/99 he played two more World Cups. After he remained without points, he started successfully at FIS races in Bedřichov u Jablonce nad Nisou and Mavrovo , before ending his active cross-country skiing career with a pointless start in the Cross-Country Continental Cup in Lillehammer.

In the Czechoslovak championships, Buchta won over 30 km in 1989 and 1991.

Since the end of his active career, he has been responsible for the snow cannons and artificial snow production in the arena of his native Nové Město na Moravě .
