Head of State (alternative video title: The White House sees black ) is an American comedy film from the year 2003 . Directed by Chris Rock , who also wrote the script and took on the lead role with Ali LeRoi .

action

The as Assistant Secretary in Washington, DC working African American Mays Gilliam loses his job. His girlfriend accuses him of having broken her dream of getting ahead and is leaving him. Gilliam meets Lisa Clark, who lives on two temporary jobs.

After a collision of the planes of the candidates for the offices of President of the United States and Vice President in which both politicians die, Gilliam's party surprisingly nominates him as a candidate for that office. He's going up against the incumbent vice president, who politicians give him a better chance because he's related to Sharon Stone . Debra Lassiter heads the election campaign.

Gilliam's brother, Mitch, persuades him to speak openly about his beliefs, which increases his ratings in the polls. He is attacked sharply by his opponent, to which he reacts similarly sharp. In the end he wins the election. Clark accepts his proposal of marriage.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on March 28, 2003 that the film was neither boring nor lacking in intelligence. However, the authors would not reveal what they really think, they would simply repeat some banalities. Mitch Gilliam and Kim's characters wouldn't work.

The lexicon of international film wrote that the film was a "wacky political comedy with a good shot of African-American social criticism, the mutual resentments as a bead" take "as political opportunism" . He failed “despite the approaches worth considering” , “because his main actor, who also took on the less than cinema-friendly direction, is not convincing on the big screen” .

Chris Rock and the film for Best Comedy were nominated for a Teen Choice Award in 2003 . The film, its script, Chris Rock as both director and lead actor, and Lynn Whitfield were nominated for a 2004 BET Comedy Award . The screenwriters were nominated for the 2004 Black Reel Award . Bernie Mac was nominated for an Image Award in 2004.
