Location of Fümmelse in Wolfenbüttel

history

Stone cross in front of the church of Fümmelse

Before the place was documented in writing, it is assumed that farmers and fishermen certainly lived in the area of Fümmelse. With the construction of the Michaeliskirche in Braunschweig , this church received lands around Fümmelse. This emerges from a confirmation from Bishop Bruno von Hildesheim on July 26, 1158, in which the place was mentioned for the first time. It is not known when the Fümmelse church was built. The church tower was erected in 1566 and an organ was installed in 1843. This was no longer usable in 1885, was repaired several times and later replaced. There was also a pond mill in Fümmelse that burned down in 1627. In 1895 a brick factory was built in the village, which later became known as Wolfenbütteler Tonwerke . Some of the buildings have been demolished or have been preserved for residential purposes. The clay works was shut down in 1992 and the associated clay pit was used as a swimming pool, which was put into operation in 1925. It is today's swimming pool "Fümmelsee". Wolfenbüttler citizens and the castle used to get drinking water from the pond. near the swimming pool area was the place Klein Fümmelsee, which probably died in the 14th century as a result of the plague . The name of the place developed from Vimmelse , Vemelhusen or Vimmelhusen .

Until November 1, 1957, the municipality of Fümmelse still included the district of Brunonia am Fümmelsern Holz, which was incorporated into Wolfenbüttel.

On March 1, 1974, Fümmelse was incorporated into a district of the city of Wolfenbüttel.
