Wendessen is a village in the Wolfenbüttel district in Lower Saxony and is now part of the Wolfenbüttel district town . It is located on the historic Wolfenbüttel – Halberstadt highway, today's federal highway 79 , which crosses the Altenau River here.

history

In 1170 the place was first mentioned under the name Winethissem. In the time around 1200 the place got the name Wenethesheim. In addition, the patronage rights were transferred to the St. Blasii Abbey in Braunschweig, which they received as a gift from Emperor Otto IV . In 1358 the place was finally renamed Wendessen.

In the following time, Wendessen was attacked several times. The Braunschweiger invaded Wendessen in 1493 and 1550, while troops of the Schmalkaldic League destroyed the Wendesser rectory in 1542. In 1627, Wendessen was destroyed by Danish soldiers in the Thirty Years War . The Wendesser Gut, which today belongs to the city of Wolfenbüttel, was built as early as 1660 and named a princely chamber property in 1736. Until 2001 it belonged to a branch of the Seeliger family , who had bought it from the Müller district councilor in 1864.

The Wolfenbüttel – Oschersleben railway has been running through the town since 1843 - since 2007 only as far as Schöppenstedt - but since 1982 no passenger trains have stopped in Wendessen. The reactivation of the Wendessen stop was contractually agreed in March 2019.

In 1857 a sugar factory was built, which was closed 100 years later.

Wendessen also suffered some damage in the course of the Second World War . The air raid on January 14, 1944 destroyed not only the manor and the 12th century church, but also numerous stables and houses. 36 people were killed when a bomb was dropped on a stopping train.

On March 1, 1974, Wendessen was incorporated into the district town of Wolfenbüttel.

coat of arms

A green willow fence can be seen in the lower part of the Wendessen coat of arms. There is a red cross behind it. The fence is supposed to allude to agriculture, which once occupied an important place in the community. The red cross is a heraldic attribute of the patron saint St. George. The name Wendessen also alludes to the coat of arms, it means home in the willow fence .

Culture and sights

  • The fortified church of St. George from the 12th century was almost completely destroyed in 1944, but was able to be rebuilt through great private commitment.
  • The manor, built in 1660, became a princely chamber manor in 1736. After changing ownership, the estate now belongs to the city of Wolfenbüttel.
