After the early death of his parents, he came to live with his uncle, the heir to Lichtenberg and court marshal of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Balthasar Henning von Wendessen . After Friedrich became king, he transferred Wendessen to the "Kalkstein zu Fuß" regiment . There he became ensign in 1743, second lieutenant in 1744 and premier lieutenant in 1749.

In 1757 he was first staff captain and later captain. In 1762 he was promoted to major and in 1772 to lieutenant colonel. In 1774 he received the Pour le Mérite and in 1775 became a colonel. He must have enjoyed a high reputation in Breslau, because his officers had a coin struck in his memory. In 1797 he died in Warsaw.

He took part in the Silesian Wars and was wounded in the Battle of Thrush , as well as in the Battle of Kolin . During the War of the Bavarian Succession , he was with the first battalion of the Renzel on foot regiment in Weiskirchen when the Imperial Austrians attacked the Prussians on November 12, 1778.
