Howard Sackler

Howard Oliver Sackler (born December 19, 1929 in New York City , New York - † October 12, 1982 in Ibiza , Spain ) was an American screenwriter and playwright , who in 1969 for his play The Great White Hope with both the Pulitzer Prize for Theater as well as the Tony Award for Best Play.

Life

Sackler began working as a screenwriter in the mid-1950s and wrote the screenplay for his first film Fear and Desire together with Stanley Kubrick in 1953 . In 1954 he wrote his first play Uriel Acosta . In 1955 he worked again with Kubrick and wrote the script for his film The Tiger of New York with him .

His most successful stage work was The Great White Hope (1967), which won both the Pulitzer Prize for Theater and the Tony Award for Best Play in 1969. In 1970 this was filmed by Martin Ritt under the title The Great White Hope (original title The Great White Hope ) with James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander in the lead roles. For the script he wrote himself, he was nominated in 1971 for the Prize of the Writers Guild of America (WGA Award) for the best adapted screenplay.

His other well-known works include the scripts for the films Jaws (1975), Jaws 2 (1978), U-Boot in Not (1978) and Saint Jack (1979) by Peter Bogdanovich .
