Hugh Latimer Dryden
Hugh Latimer Dryden (born July 2, 1898 in Pocomoke City , Maryland , † December 2, 1965 ) was an American scientist and science administrator.
Life
Dryden studied physics at Johns Hopkins University . The subject of his 1916 dissertation was "Airplanes: An Introduction to the Physical Principles Embodied in their Use."
In 1918 Dryden became a member of the National Institute of Standards and Technology , where he became a department head in 1920. He mainly worked in the field of aerodynamics . During the Second World War he was involved in the development of the North American P-51 fighter aircraft and the SWOD MK 9 " Bat " missile .
In 1946, Dryden was appointed director of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics ( NACA ), which became NASA in 1958 . There he was Deputy Administrator from August 19, 1958 until his death on December 2, 1965.
From 1941 to 1956, Dryden was a part-time editor of the Journal of the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences .
An impact crater on the moon with a diameter of about 51 km was named after Hugh Dryden and on March 26, 1976 the NASA Flight Research Center was renamed Dryden Flight Research Center in his honor .
He received the Medal for Merit , formerly the highest civilian honor in the USA. In 1944 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences . In 1950 he was admitted to the American Philosophical Society , 1958 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and 1959 to the Académie des Sciences in Paris. In 1964 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering . Since 1926 he was a fellow of the American Physical Society . Posthumously, he was awarded the National Medal of Science by the US President in 1966 .
