occupation

Marley & Ich is the 2008 film adaptation of the book of the same name by John Grogan . Directed by David Frankel . The film premiered in Germany on March 5, 2009.

action

The Michigan journalist couple Jenny and John Grogan decide to leave the cold winters behind and move south to Palm Beach . There they buy a house and are soon faced with the question of whether they are ready to have children. Since John in particular is not entirely sure, they decide to first "try out" the role of parenting and family life with a dog . This leads to the purchase of a Labrador Retriever puppy, which John names Marley in honor of Bob Marley . This becomes the beloved family member who causes great chaos. The animal trainer is also desperate and throws Marley off the course.

The film accompanies the couple over the next few years: marital disputes are overcome, children are born and Marley accompanies the family as a loyal friend. John takes a job near Philadelphia . The family of five gradually realizes that Marley has gotten old and weak. The parents prepare the children so that Marley will not live long.

In Philadelphia, John meets his former friend and colleague Sebastian again, who has taken a different path in life. He made a career as a journalist and leads an independent and varied life without a steady girlfriend with constantly changing partners. Both assure each other of their mutual respect and then go their separate ways.

Marley has repeated stomach problems and the vet advises John to have him euthanized, which he does. Marley is buried in the garden and John remembers the years together and the animal's unconditional love for him.

Background / origin

The film is based on the book of the same name by John Grogan. In his autobiographical family and dog novel, he not only describes the dog's pranks and idiosyncrasies, he also describes the emotional ties between dog and human .

The film was produced by Fox 2000 Pictures and is distributed by 20th Century Fox Film Corporation.

Alongside Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston , Eric Dane and Alan Arkin ( Little Miss Sunshine , Inspector Clouseau ) play. Kathleen Turner ( Der Rosenkrieg ) has a brief appearance as a dog trainer . Author Grogan and his wife also have a brief cameo in this scene . Marley ages 13 years in the course of the film and is therefore played by several dogs, a total of 22. 11 of the dogs were needed to portray the puppy, as the film scenes were not filmed in the sequence shown later and the puppies were accordingly too fast grew to be shown in a follow-up scene a few weeks later. The head trainer on set was Mark Forbes.

Reviews

The reaction of the criticism was different, on Rotten Tomatoes the film was rated 63 out of 100 points. Christina Krisch wrote in the Kronen-Zeitung on March 5, 2009 that if you see your dog as a full family member, you will get away from the charm of this turbulent "mutt comedy" and his extremely funny and impetuous woof, who keep a somewhat colorless star duo on their toes , will undoubtedly be lured. Sascha Keilholz tore the film and spoke of unimaginative staging of human contempt disguised as animal friendliness. The lexicon of international films wrote: "The well-intentioned commercial for American family life gives its characters little room to develop and remains too superficial to be touched."

The Wiesbaden Film Assessment Office gave the film the rating “valuable”. The film is "a beautiful and atmospheric comedy, like a look at the family album: told with a lot of attention to detail, carried by sympathetic actors and moving moments."

Prequel

In 2011 the prequel Marley & Me 2 - The Naughty Puppy In the World was released. Directed by Michael Damian .
