Hidden Beauty (Original Title: Collateral Beauty ) is an American drama film directed by David Frankel from 2016 . The star cast consists of Will Smith , Edward Norton , Keira Knightley , Michael Peña , Naomie Harris , Jacob Latimore , Kate Winslet and Helen Mirren .

The film opened in the United States on December 16, 2016. The German theatrical release was on January 19, 2017.

In New York living adman Howard Inlet is in a deep depression after losing his little daughter. This makes his life seem more and more unbearable to him. He writes passionate letters to death, time and love. His friends and work colleagues are worried and try to rebuild him with unusual "therapy". Three people act as actors for death, time and love, which Howard confronts directly and gives him an answer.

The film should initially be cast completely different: Hugh Jackman was planned for the lead role in May 2015 , Rooney Mara was to appear at his side and Alfonso Gomez-Rejon was planned to direct . Only the script, which was written by Allan Loeb , was already there. Over time, many actors have been named who would star in the film, including How-I-Met-Your-Mother star Jason Segel and Johnny Depp .

In mid-2015 it was finally announced that Jackman had left the project due to his role in the movie Logan - The Wolverine and Will Smith would take on the lead role instead .

Filming

Filming for the film began on location in New York in February 2016 and took place in Queens and Manhattan , among others . In Manhattan, some scenes were filmed at the Whitney Museum of American Art .
