Jane Espenson (born July 14, 1964 in Ames, Iowa ) is an American screenwriter , comic book writer and film producer , who is best known for her work for the series Buffy - The Vampire Slayer .

Life

During her studies at the University of California ( Berkeley ), Espenson submitted a number of scripts as a result of a call for amateur scriptwriters from the makers of the series Spaceship Enterprise: The Next Century . Participation in the Disney Writing Fellowship was the next step in her career. For Disney she wrote on various sitcoms such as Monty , Die Dinos and Ellen . In a reorientation of her work, she left the comedy series behind and turned to Joss Whedon's project Buffy - The Vampire Slayer .

After studying linguistics , she worked as a research assistant at George Lakoff .

Main work

Espenson worked for Whedon's production company Mutant Enemy from 1998 . Especially the third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer bears her signature. Since then, she has held the series in various positions in the production and screenwriting process, right through to completion. For her work on the Buffy episode Conversations with Dead People of the seventh season, she received the Hugo Award in 2003 in the category Best Dramatic Presentation, short form . As a result of her association with Whedon, she wrote scripts for Firefly - The Dawn of the Serenity and Angel - Raiders of Darkness . For the comic adaptation of the Buffy series, she is involved as an author together with Whedon and others on several issues.

From 2003 she was involved in the production of the fourth season of the series Gilmore Girls and from 2006 to 2008 as a co-producer on all episodes of the fourth season of Battlestar Galactica . For the third season of Battlestar Galactica she wrote two scripts. She also wrote the script for the 2009 television film Battlestar Galactica: The Plan and has been a co-producer on the Battlestar spin-off Caprica since 2009 .

In 2010 she wrote several episodes for the HBO series Game of Thrones and the fourth season of Torchwood . In 2011 she worked as a consulting producer and screenwriter on the series Once Upon a Time .
