Emilio de los Santos Salcie (born October 12, 1903 in San Juan de la Maguana , † June 10, 1986 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican politician and President of the Dominican Republic .

biography

Emilio de los Santos was born into a large family in San Juan de la Maguana; his parents were Juan Justo de los Santos and María Antonia Salcié. After attending school in his hometown and in Santo Domingo, he completed a law degree at the University of Santo Domingo from 1926 (since 1961 Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo ), which he graduated in 1930. After graduating, he worked as a professor . He was married to María Cristina Borensen, with whom he had two daughters.

As an opponent of the Trujillo regime ( Rafael , 1942–1952, and Hector B. , 1952–1960), he was arrested several times and imprisoned for a long time.

In 1962 he was chairman of the Central Electoral Council (Junta Central Electoral), which proclaimed the election victory of President Juan Bosch Gaviño . After President Bosch was overthrown, he became chairman of a triumvirate on September 26, 1963, and became its successor as President of the Dominican Republic . The triumvirate also included Manuel Enrique Tavares Espaillat and Ramón Tapia Espinal. In addition to right-wing politicians, the triumvirate's government also consisted of non-party ministers. In December 1963 there was an uprising by guerrilla units of the June 14 Movement, led by Manuel Aurelio Tavárez Justo, against the triumvirate government. When Emilio de los Santos learned that the uprising had been put down and the insurgents killed, he resigned from the triumvirate on December 22, 1963. Donald Reid Cabral became its chairman . The decision of Emilio de los Santos not to act as a figurehead for the butcher is shown respect and esteem in parts of the population of the Dominican Republic.

Until his death he worked for the law firm Rogues Román-Bergés in Santo Domingo, which he founded, and enjoyed a high reputation as a lawyer. Nevertheless, he lived in modest circumstances. Even during his tenure as president, he only used public transport to get to the government palace. Even after that, he moved in Santo Domingo like an ordinary citizen.
