Donald Joseph Reid Cabral (born June 9, 1923 in Santiago de los Caballeros , † July 22, 2006 ) was a Dominican politician and President of the Dominican Republic .

Life

The son of the Scottish immigrant William Reid and the Dominican Auristela Cabral Bermúdez, whose great-grandfather was the counter-president José María Cabral between 1865 and 1868, studied law at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo after attending school . After working as a lawyer, he joined the diplomatic service and was, among other things, special envoy of the United Nations (UN) in Israel . In addition, he worked as a businessman and as such, among other things, automobile dealer.

Between 1962 and 1963 he was a member of the Council of State (Consejos de Estado). After President Juan Bosch was overthrown , on December 29, 1963, he succeeded Emilio de los Santos as chairman of the triumvirate that succeeded Bosch. In this function he took over the offices of Foreign Minister (Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores) and Defense Minister (Secretaría de las Fuerzas Armadas) at the same time, the most important government offices within the triumvirate, to which Ramon Cáceres Troncoso and Ramon Tapia Espinal belonged. His government can initially rely on the support of the USA and is often referred to as a puppet government set up by them. His reign was marked by corruption, food shortages due to drought, widespread unemployment, strikes, acts of sabotage and constant opposition from dissidents . On April 24, 1965, insurgent constitutionalist military arrested the supporters of the Reid Cabral government, so that he resigned at noon after the US naval attaché had denied him the requested support. Bosch's former Vice President José Rafael Molina Ureña was then sworn in as provisional president. On the following day, however, he was replaced by Colonel Francisco Alberto Caamaño . The April coup eventually grew into civil war .

In 1979 he became a member of the board of directors of the Instituto Cultural Dominico Americano (ICDA).

After the resignation of President Joaquín Balaguer , he succeeded him as chairman of the Partido Reformista Social Cristiano (PRSC) until his death in 1996 . After his death, he was honored with a state funeral, which President Leonel Fernández also attended.
