history

It was founded on October 28, 1538 by Pope Paul III, for this he issued the bull "In Apostolatus Culmine", with the aim of promoting this kind of general education (General Studies), which the Dominicans had directed since 1518 - in Santo Domingo , the oldest colonial settlement in America. The University of Alcalá de Henera acted as a model for this.

At first there were four faculties and according to the norms of similar institutions at the time: Medicine, Law, Theology and Art. The arts studies also included grammar, rhetoric, logic and the “quadrivium”, a subject that includes arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and music.

In 1801, as a consequence of the Haitian occupation of the country, the university suspended its work because the Dominicans who ran it left the colony. It was reopened in 1815 when the colony returned under Spanish sovereignty, but was from then on secular.

Between 1815 and 1821 she worked under the rectorate of José Núñez de Cáceres and closed its doors again in 1822. This was due to the fact that many of the students were drafted into military service - decreed by the Haitian regime that was ruling the nation at the time . With the independence of the republic in 1844, the Dominicans also wanted to reopen the university, as a symbol of cultural tradition and the character of their newly acquired nationality.

In response to this exclamation, the President passed a law to reopen the old University of Santo Domingo - with an academic division similar to that of the medieval universities (four faculties: Philosophy, Law, Medicine and the Sacred Letters). But due to the political circumstances, the aforementioned project was not implemented and the university did not reopen.

On December 31, 1866, the “Instituto Profesional” was founded by decree, which took up its function on site and as a replacement for the old University of Santo Domingo.

From May 10, 1891 to August 16, 1895, the “Instituto Profesional” closed its doors again. On November 16, 1914, it was the President of the Republic, Ramón Báez, who was also rector of the Instituto Profesional, who declared it to be the “Universidad de Santo Domingo” again by decree.

As a consequence of the North American intervention, the university had to stop working again between 1916 and 1924. During the 31 years of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo's dictatorship, the Universidad de Santo Domingo, like the other institutions in the country, was deprived of the fundamental freedoms that are needed to do justice to its destiny. It became an instrument of political control and propaganda.
