Second chance (original title: En chance til ) is a drama by Susanne Bier from 2014 . It had its cinema premiere on January 15, 2015 in Denmark, in Germany it was shown in film theaters from May 14, 2015.
action
During an operation with his colleague Simon in the neglected apartment of the junkie couple Tristan and Sanne, the policeman Andreas discovers a baby in the closet that is lying in his excrement . Since the baby that bears the name Sofus is healthy, it cannot be taken away from its parents.
Andreas and his wife Anna have a baby named Alexander. They take care of him lovingly, but it's more exhausting than they thought, as he often screams at night, and so Andreas often drives him to sleep a little. One morning Alexander doesn't wake up. Anna threatens to kill herself if Andreas calls the ambulance, who would take Alexander away from her. After giving his wife Anna sleeping pills, Andreas drives the dead baby to the clinic, but then decides to exchange the babies in Tristan and Sanne's apartment. Anna reacts disturbed to her husband's actions.
The next morning Tristan notices that Sofus is dead. Since he fears that he and Sanne will have to go to jail, he takes the baby out of the apartment. In a busy street, he fakes the baby is being kidnapped from the stroller. Andreas and Simon, who are in charge of the investigation, repeatedly interrogate Tristan and Sanne and want to find out from both of them what they did with the dead child (Alexander).
After a while Anna seems to have come to terms with the new situation. During one of her nocturnal walks, she stands with the stroller on a bridge in the middle of the road, forcing a truck driver to stop. After she has forced the baby on him and he wants to take it to the truck to keep it warm, he sees Anna plunge into the depths. The baby (Sofus) will be looked after by Andreas and his mother for the next few days.
In further interrogations, Andreas and his partner Tristan try to get them to talk. Andreas made a promise when he once said "Alexander" instead of "Sofus". After Tristan was told that Sanne had testified and that the baby had to be found to prove cot death , he told the truth. Andreas has an outburst, hits and kicks Tristan, whereupon his superior sends him home and orders an interview with the police psychologist. Tristan leads the police to the forest where he buried the baby.
Sanne was placed in a psychiatric hospital. She keeps saying that the baby wasn't Sofus.
During the autopsy of Alexander it turns out that he died of a cerebral haemorrhage due to a shaking trauma, as well as several other older cerebral haemorrhages and several broken ribs. Andreas realizes that Anna is responsible for the abuse. In a short-circuit reaction with Sofus, he goes to his mother's summer house. His police partner Simon has since figured out that Andreas must have switched the babies. He looks for him in the summer house and makes it clear to him that he has to face himself. Although he would be released from the police force, he would probably get away with a suspended sentence because of the considerably attenuating circumstances.
Andreas brings Sofus to Sanne in the clinic, who is beside herself with joy. A few years later, Sanne and Sofus went shopping at the hardware store where Andreas now works. When she briefly leaves the bright child alone, Andreas speaks to him and learns his identity.

Reviews
"In this thriller of lively spiritual depth, Susanne Bier blurs all moral boundaries, she consistently breaks categories of good and evil, pushes the viewer into the depths of human existence."
"'Second Chance', despite its milieu clichés and excessive clarity, is an intense, thought-provoking drama that focuses entirely on its characters."
