action

The newlyweds George and Serena Pemberton moved from Boston to North Carolina in 1929 to start the lucrative timber business. In doing so, Serena proves to be equal to her husband: She controls the workers, manages finances, develops business strategies and saves the life of the rough tracker Galloway while doing the woodwork. Business is flourishing, but the Pembertons are being targeted by the judiciary on suspicion of falsified balance sheets and bribery, and the government is also planning to build a national park on Pemberton's property . To avert the danger, George is also ready to kill his friend Buchanan, who threatens to have him blown.

When Serena loses her unborn child and learns that she is sterile, her hatred of her husband's former lover and his child makes her lose touch with reality and morality, because as a child she lost her entire family in a fire. Out of jealousy, she wants to break the connection between George and his illegitimate family. She doesn't stop at the killing either and after killing the boy's carer, she instructs her new henchman Galloway to kill the boy and his mother herself. In order to find out where his son is hidden by the police so that he can protect him from Galloway, George turns himself in to the sheriff and confesses his fakes and bribes. Just in time he saved his son and his mother from death. George is then killed by a puma while hunting and Serena ultimately chooses to commit suicide by setting her hut on fire.

reception

criticism

The film received largely negative reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , only 31% of reviews are positive, out of a total of 36 reviews. The average rating is 4.5 / 10. At Metacritic , the film received a rating of 40/100 with a total of 7 reviews.

The Hollywood Reporter said the film had only one key flaw: it was difficult "to believe a single word, let alone the ruthlessly selfish and short-sighted characters." Also criticized were Christopher Kyle's script, a “sequence of jarring clichés and wooden attempts in the subtext”, as well as Johan Soderqvist's film music, which was “saturated” and “imploring orchestral”. The film-dienst described the film as "an old-fashioned melodrama that does not find a clear line in terms of staging and is neither a historical film about the era of depression nor a jealous drama that is convincing."

The Cinema called the film, however, a "first class played and disturbing narrated drama". The film skilfully plays “with the self-destructive emotions of human nature” such as “fear of loss, grief, greed and unbridled obsession”. The film website kino.de criticized that “some sentimentalities just miss the kitsch”, but the film would go beyond a “love story” and create a “web of erotic manipulation and dark machinations” against the background of the 1929 economic crisis.

Birgit Roschy from epd Film judged that the epic demonstrates “a lot of wood in front of the hut”: “two stars who sparked sparks in Silver Linings, widescreen panoramas, rich colors, opulent costumes and a siren in the glamorous retro Hollywood style, theirs platinum blonde waves must be exactly laid even under the most adverse circumstances ”. Nevertheless, despite the weighty themes, the story “quickly loses its traction. The carefully decorated woodcutter's backdrop “seems strangely set up and narrow”, you get “neither a feeling for the bloody details of the work nor for the backwoods proletariat, in which Serena strikes like a comet”.

Gross profit

With a budget between 25 and 30 million US dollars, he made only 3.9 million US dollars worldwide.
