action

Three years after the natural disaster in the Geirangerfjord , geologist Kristian Eikjord lives separately from his Oslo- based family, alone in a house on the fjord. He has psychological problems and sends his daughter Julia, who is visiting him, away again. Soon there is a rock fall in the Oslofjord tunnel, in which Kristian's friend and work colleague Konrad Lindblom dies. Only after Kristian has received the news of his death does he open a letter that Konrad recently sent him. It contains documents with notes that Konrad made during his work and that suggest an imminent earthquake in Oslo. Kristian then went to Oslo, where he understood Konrad's investigations. Among other things, he discovered that several small earthquakes, which were previously thought to be caused by explosions during construction work, are actually of non-human origin. Kristian informs the head of the geological institute, Johannes Løberg, but he interprets Kristian's findings as not dangerous enough. Johannes only changes his mind when there is a slight foreshock that damages the Oslo Opera House .

With the help of Konrad's daughter Marit and, accompanied by Julia, Kristian goes to the 40-story Oslo skyscraper, on the 34th floor of which his wife Idun works. His intention is to get Idun out of the building because of the impending earthquake. When Kristian wants to leave the 34th floor with Idun in the elevator, he discovers Julia, who followed him illegally, but he can no longer reach her because the elevator doors are closed. While Kristian is in the elevator with Idun, the main tremor occurs. It destroys large parts of Oslo and causes massive damage. The skyscraper partially collapses, which puts Julia and her previously followed Marit on the 34th floor in mortal danger. While trying to escape the elevator shaft, Idun falls to his death in front of Kristian's eyes. After that, however, he can help save Julia and Marit from death and leave the house with them.

criticism

The film service rated the work with three out of five possible stars and praised it for its initial efforts to develop “a gripping character study” and “skillfully build tension in anticipation of the quake”. "As a result of the spectacular, trick-technically implemented disaster at Hollywood level, however, he gives up his polyphony in favor of more conventional thrills."
