occupation

Troubled Water is a Norwegian feature film from 2008 that was made in a Swedish-German co-production.

action

A bad boy prank that ended fatally is at the beginning. Jan Thomas Hansen and a friend stole the stroller waiting in front of a café in order to steal valuables from the bag hanging on it. In the stroller was a little boy who was killed as a result of this act. He fell down a slope, causing his head to bleed. Jan, who was still very immature at the time, carried the boy into the nearby river, instigated by the harsh words of his friend. He noticed that he was looking into his eyes, but let go of him anyway - and the child drowned.

Jan was sentenced along with his friend. Jan learned to play the organ in prison and attended prison masses. After eight years he was allowed to leave the prison because of good conduct. At large again, he is given a second chance. Under his middle name Thomas he got the job of organist in a congregation in Oslo , which is led by the single mother Anna as pastor. Due to his unconventional musical and sometimes very emotional way of playing, Thomas quickly became very popular with parishioners. For a group of students visiting the church, he plays the song Bridge over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel . Thomas gets a small apartment and also takes care of Anna's son Jens, who looks like the victim at the time. A love affair slowly develops between Thomas and Anna.

Agnes is the mother of the deceased boy. The Dane is a teacher in Oslo. She and her husband Jon have now adopted two Asian girls. The teacher visits a church with students and recognizes the alleged manslaughter of her son in the organist of the church. Again the emotions of the past break open and Agnes becomes mad. She begins to observe Jan Thomas and discovers the close relationship between him and little Jens. When Jens waits alone on the street for Jan Thomas, Agnes kidnaps the child to protect him from Jan Thomas. Jan Thomas suddenly finds himself in the same situation as Agnes back then. He is desperately looking for the boy. In the meantime, Agnes has taken him home, where her husband realizes the tricky situation and notifies the mother. Jan Thomas learns where the boy is and makes his way to Agnes. Agnes rushes out of the house with the boy and Jan Thomas can sit in the car with her. Agnes drives to the river where her son died. While Agnes and Jan Thomas are arguing with each other, Jens runs into the river. Agnes and Jan Thomas can barely save the child. It remains to be seen whether Jan and Anna will reconcile. However, there is a hint of a reconciliation in the last scene of the two, in which Jan asks her for forgiveness as a person and not as a pastor.

background

The organ music was recorded by Iver Kleive .

Reviews

“Erik Poppe pulls out all the stops in terms of drama and narrative strategy. He chases his figures across the volcanic terrain of their inner desert. The lava can be thrown out at any moment: as an outbreak of violence or as a stormy desire for tenderness. 'Troubled Water' is melodrama and meditation, multi-perspective soul research and criminal investigation. "

- Süddeutsche Zeitung of March 18, 2010

"Erik Poppe cleverly links the past and the present in the film, lets the different levels slide into one another and thus depicts the different, very contrary points of view of the protagonists, which conveys a complex picture to the viewer, so that the question of guilt and atonement is not beyond doubt can be answered.
