Janet Patterson

Janet Patterson (born August 12, 1956 in Sydney , New South Wales ; † October 21, 2016 there ) was an Australian costume designer and art director who was not only nominated four times for the Oscar for best costume design , but also numerous other film awards for the received costumes designed by her.

Life

Janet Patterson first worked as a costume designer for television productions such as Palace of Dreams (1985) and Zwei gute Freundinnen (1986) in the mid- 1980s . For Paths of Love (1992) she was initially nominated in 1992 for the Australian Film Institute (AFI Award) for best production design.

She had her first international success with the costumes for the film Das Piano (1993). Not only did she receive her first nomination for the Oscar for best costume design at the 1994 Academy Awards , but in 1994 she won the AFI Award and the BAFTA Award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) for Best Costumes .

Another hit was the film Portrait of a Lady (1996). In addition to another nomination for the Oscar for best costume design in 1997 , she won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for best production design (LACFA Award), which she shared with Brian Morris, the costume designer of the film Evita . In addition, she was nominated in 1997 for the Satellite Award for the most outstanding costume design and the most outstanding art direction.

She received her next Oscar nomination in 1998 for the costumes in Oscar and Lucinda (1997) and won the AFI Award for this in 1998. In 2004 she received a nomination from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films for the Saturn Award for best Costume for Peter Pan (2003).

Her last success was for the costumes in Bright Star : In addition to the Oscar for the best costumes at the 2010 Academy Awards , she was also nominated for another BAFTA award for best costume design and finally won the IF Award for best production design in 2010 . Most recently she was involved in On the Green Edge of the World (2015).

Her death became public in late October 2016, her exact age and cause of death were kept under lock and key. She left behind husband Al and their then 18-year-old daughter Nina.

On the occasion of the 2017 Academy Awards , Janet Patterson was remembered in the “In Memoriam” segment. However, a photo of her long-time colleague and friend Jan Chapman was incorrectly shown.
