Orlando Ernie Benedict von Einsiedel (born August 19, 1980 in London ) is a British documentary filmmaker . He became known through the skateboard short documentary Skateistan: To Live and Skate in Kabul about the Skateistan project with young people in Kabul , Afghanistan .

As the son of Andreas Jean-Paul Graf von Einsiedel and Harriet Angela Victoria Duckworth, Orlando von Einsiedel belongs to the old Meissen aristocratic family Einsiedel ; through his mother he also comes from the British aristocracy. He grew up in London and attended the London School of Economics and Political Science , where he studied social anthropology and graduated with a Masters in Developmental Studies . He started out as a snowboarder and thus financed his film career. He first made a few snowboard films before attempting short documentaries. One of his best-known early works is the film Skateistan: To Live and Skate in Kabul , which focuses on the NGO of the same name , which teaches young people in Kabul to skateboard and tries to resolve cultural differences.

In 2014 his first feature film Virunga , u. a. produced by Leonardo DiCaprio , who describes the fight of the park rangers of the Virunga National Park to preserve the endangered mountain gorillas against various rebel groups that have settled in the park, as well as an oil company. The film was nominated at the 2015 Academy Awards in the category “Best Documentary” . In 2017 , the documentary short film The White Helmets won the Oscar in the category “Best Documentary Short Film” .

Orlando von Einsiedel is a co-founder of the film production company Grain Media.
