Skateistan is a non-governmental organization that brings together young people from different ethnic groups and social classes in Afghanistan . The organization offers skateboarding lessons designed to give young people confidence and help them overcome borders based on tribal or social background. In addition, the organization pursues the goal of getting the young people back to school and supporting their training with their own educational offers. Skateistan was founded in 2007 and has its headquarters in the Afghan capital Kabul .

history

Skateistan was founded by the Australian Oliver Percovich, who first visited Afghanistan in February 2007. Skateistan is the only skate school in Afghanistan.

Percovich developed the idea of a skate school when he arrived in Kabul in 2007 with three skateboards in his luggage and while skateboarding was repeatedly approached by Afghan boys and girls who also wanted to skateboard. Percovich initially gave informal skate lessons in a dried up well in Kabul, but soon made a plan to expand the activities. Young people in Afghanistan, especially girls, have few opportunities for sport and leisure activities. Percovich had the idea that he could reach the youngsters through the skate lessons and give them a sense of community that often doesn't exist in Afghanistan with its tribal structures and strong social differences. In the years that followed, Skateistan slowly took shape with the help of international donors and partners in the skateboarding industry. In July 2009, Skateistan officially registered as an Afghan non-governmental organization.

On October 29, 2009 Skateistan opened a skate hall with a total of 1,750 m². Here the Afghan students can learn to skate in a safe environment. In the classrooms also set up in the hall, the organization offers additional educational offers, such as computer courses.
