Sofia Boutella (born April 3, 1982 in Bab El Oued ) is an Algerian dancer ( hip-hop and breakdance ) and actress .

Life

Boutella is the daughter of the composer, singer and choreographer Safy Boutella . She graduated from Berklee College of Music and speaks English , French and Arabic .

At the age of five, Boutella started classical dance in Algeria . In 1992, when she was ten years old, she moved to France with her family . There she was engaged in rhythmic gymnastics and at the age of 16 she was part of the extended squad of the team that was preparing for the 2000 Olympic Games .

At the age of 17 she attended a sports school and started hip-hop dancing there. She won several times in the hip-hop and breakdance competitions Battles de France . She danced with the Vagabond Crew and the Chiene de Vie and Aphorodites team , founded by Momo from the Vagabond Crew . With the Vagabond Crew she won the Hip-Hop-Battle-World Championship in 2006.

She began working with the choreographer Bianca Li, the videos like Around the World by Daft Punk had choreographed. In 2002 Boutella got a role in the French film Le Défi . The action takes place on the streets of Paris and Boutella had the role of a street dancer. Then she got smaller roles in French television films and commercials .

Her breakthrough came when Nike made her the face of the female marketing campaign. The reason for this was that break dancing was only recognized as a male dance , and Boutella showed it in a new light. Then she met the choreographer Jamie King know. Together they shot the video Rock Star Workout and traveled around Europe with it .

Boutella was discovered by Madonna , whom she hired as a background dancer. She accompanied Madonna on the Confessions Tour and danced to Hung up and Sorry in her music videos . In the shows, Boutella had her own dance routine during the song Isaac , where she escapes from a metal cage. She then danced in music videos by Jamiroquai , the BodyRockers and Rihanna and became a background dancer on Mariah Carey's European tour . In the video for Hollywood Tonight , the second single from Michael Jackson's posthumously released album Michael , she is the protagonist .

In 2012 Boutella starred in the second part of the dance film StreetDance 2 . In 2014 she starred in the agent movie Kingsman: The Secret Service . In 2016, she played a bigger role in Star Trek Beyond than Alien Jaylah. In the horror film The Mummy , released in 2017 , she embodied as Princess Ahmanet or the eponymous mummy, Tom Cruise's opponent. In the same year she played the agent Delphine in Atomic Blonde .

In 2018 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
